Put It On The Ground

Original words (chorus): Ray Glaser, 1947
New verses: Miguel Heatwole, 2005

The Minister for Planning says that we don't need a voice
He'll listen to developers and then he'll make his choice
They’ve changed the legislation 'cause they didn't like red tape
Development is progress: you shouldn't call it rape

Put it on the ground, spread it all around
Dig it with a hoe, it will make your flowers grow!

The Environmental Planning and Assessment Act was bad
It made extremely wealthy people unfulfilled and sad
Imagine what a tragedy it is to meet dissent
When you only want to do what's best for the environment

When we need to build a shopping centre in a National Park
Environmental impact statements always miss the mark
The community unreasonably insists that we consult
But the minister's discretion will ensure the best result

Verse 3: Chris Maltby, 2015

A huge expensive motorway ’s what Sydneysiders need
Don’t worry about the dollars, we’ll keep you up to speed
We’re going to do it quickly, and we’re picking up the pace
It’s not about greed, & you don’t need to see our business case

Put it on the ground, spread it all around
Dig it with a hoe, it will make your flowers grow!

AECOM is a global engineering company
They’re known [except in Queensland] for outstanding probity
We’re asking them to build it, and to do the EIS
What’s wrong with that? We don’t call that conflict of interest

When motoring through our tunnels oh, the air's so fresh & clean
No toxic smog or particles are ever to be seen
'Cos we can disappear them when we pump them up our stack
No filters will be needed, the government tells us that

There’s 15 billion dollars coming from the public purse
It started out one third of that, and then got slightly worse
We’re onto it, and we can fix the huge financial hole
And rest assured it can be cured by charging modest tolls
